Backgammon, as one of the oldest games, has about 5000 years of history. Having many variations in different cultures reflects its universal character. Being connected more deeply to life and more realistic than chess has made backgammon survive without loosing its popularity. Tavla, the version played in Turkey, is almost same in checker play as its modern, doubling cube enhanced version called backgammon. Backgammon has been studied extensively using computer software during last 20-30 years. With its larger possibility space compared to checkers, chess and bridge, we can say we conquered only most typical parts of backgammon although it has been studied with computers for a long time.
